2017 Ben Murray Single Vineyard Grenache Reserve ‘Anima’

$52.00

Casa Rossa ‘Anima’

What a truly special South Australian Reserve Grenache!
To try this wine is a pleasure indeed!

Ben Murray winemakers look to create quality wines with a distinctly Barossa identity from the varieties that thrive in their golden valley

This delicious Reserve Grenache drop is produced from old, single vineyards, and hand-picked, whole berries.

It is wild-fermented, through new and old oak barrique, neither fined nor filtered.

This is a lovely Barossa grenache with bright, clear colour, slipping in some fine-grained tannins amongst the cherry fruits.

A great expression of the ‘soul’ of the grenache fields of South Australia’s Barossa valley.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

This 2017 Casa Rossa Anima Reserve Grenache is reflective of a growing season that produced quite specific wines from the Barossa region. From the totally dry grown, non-tilled, non-sprayed Casa Rossa Grenache Vineyard in Lyndoch, owned by Ben Murray partner Craig Thompson, in the southern Barossa, the production of each vintage is totally dependent on the ability of the vines to survive the season to deliver the final fruit suitable to make the wine.

The vines produced ripe fruit in early March, which was handpicked, then crushed and fermented in open fermenters, cap plunged twice daily, in small fermenters.

Following fermenting to dryness, the wine was left in contact with the must for an additional 16 days. Pressed and racked directly to a mix of new and old French oak barrels for maturation for 18 months.

Racked from barrel and prepared for bottling the resulting wine is a great indicator of the more classic and elegant Grenache capability from the Barossa.

This Barossa Valley “Anima” Reserve Grenache from Ben Murray lends itself a companion to all game meats, lamb, beef, and poultry.

Considering the special nature of this drop, it deserves an impressive feast to pair with! Our suggestions include Roast Pheasant or quail with honey roasted vegetables, slow cooked lamb shanks, Shepard’s pie, or pasta with venison ragu.

For the more casual context you could try this drop with French Bistro fare, smoked cheeses, grilled figs with blue cheese or even barbequed pork sausages.

The length and balance of this Grenache also sings when accompanied to any dishes with dark, winy sauces and reductions.

The Winery

In truth, Ben Murray is not one person, but two very passionate wine lovers who dreamed of one day crafting premium small batch wines with elegance and texture.

Like all great partnerships, it started with a common interest.

For Dan Eggleton (middle name – Ben) and Craig Thompson (middle name – Murray), that interest happened to a good drop of wine. As both Dan and Craig are originally Barossa boys, they have tasted a great wine or two…. or three over the years!
