2017/18 Calabria I.G.T ‘Vignacorta’


Fattoria San Francesco has produced an elegant expression of a red Calabria I.G.T with this ‘Vignacorta’ with a bright ruby red colour whose violet hues reveal an aged and full wine.

An intense bouquet meets the nose; plum mixes with cassis, spice and balsamic notes as well as cherry nuances.

To taste, you’ll find a red wine that’s full yet not completely dry and warms in the mouth. The flavours have good balance and persistence.

A wine to match to savoury entrée and main dishes with a base of red meats or mature cheese and herbs. Well suited to fresher months to be enjoyed alone, or as a solid accompaniment to many meals.

What does our Somm say?

This Dry red example of a Calabria I.G.T from Fattoria San Francesco has enjoyed some serious International recognition in the last decade, and for good reason.


The combination of Gaglioppo and Magliocco grape make for a rich, full bodied combination, whilst the 9 months of ageing in French barrique and further refinement in the bottle allows a depth of flavour and aroma to develop in this wine, ‘Vignacorta’.


In terms of food pairing, stay close to entrées or main dishes that are meat based or reasonably rich in flavour.

Some specific suggestions would be any of the following; quality wagyu steak, roasted quail, veal scallopini, cannelloni pasta bake, marinated & roasted vegetables, home made meat pie, herb infused sausages or pasta with broccoli and cheese sauce.


If ‘full and rich’ is not the way you like to eat, this wine is super enjoyable with simple aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Roquefort or Danish Blue.

The Winery

Fattoria San Francesco is located in Quattromani in the D.O.C. region of Cirò in Calabria, surrounded by gentle slopes overlooking the Ionian Sea and vineyards, in the heart of an area traditionally suited to viticulture.


The Estate of Fattoria San Francesco finds its origins in the foundation of a convent of monks in 1578, where vineyards were placed in all their surrounding lands.


The convent was suppressed by a decree of the King Ferdinando IV on 30 October 1770. After this resolution, the convent’s assets, including the factories, were exhibited at auction and on 14 July 1777 sold to Don Benedetto Siciliani.
From those vineyards, still today, the wines of Fattoria San Francesco are produced.

In every wine of Fattoria San Francesco there is a centuries-old commitment to the year 1777, when the Siciliani Family won the convent at auction San Francesco founded by the monk De Paola

Dr. Francesco Siciliani, the last descendant of a family of winemakers, continued the family tradition, creating, in the midst of vineyards and olive groves, a modern cellar with cutting-edge winemaking methods.


In 2013, Fattoria San Francesco was taken over by the Iuzzolini family who continued its philosophy by reconciling the most modern winemaking techniques with the two-thousand-year-old wine traditions of the area. With a renewed range of wines of absolute quality, modern and young, the new Fattoria San Francesco immediately enters the high-end market, skipping the large-scale distribution and positioning itself in that niche of excellent products. They have enjoyed numerous International wine awards in recent years.
