2018 Cannonau Di Sardegna D.O.C.

$48.75

‘Radice’

Young, fruity, clear and sincere.

Bring our Cannonau Di Sardegna D.O.C. to your next family roast, and wow them with a little wine knowledge while you sip some seriously delicious red from Sardegna.

This drop ‘Radice’, meaning ‘Root’ (as in plant/grape vine roots) comes from the Italian island of Sardegna, a place of inimitable, rich history of wine and culinary traditions. The organic soil upon which the vineyards grow have a unique limestone matrix, upon rocky hills that overlook the crystal blue sea of the Gulf of Asinara.

The name of this wine is a nod to both the historical significance of the Cannonau grape tight to the island, but also the passion of wine culture and production, rooted in history, that runs through the veins of the people in this region.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

If you’re an average Australia drinker, you may not have heard of ‘Cannonau’ of Sardegna. It’s a grape grown on the Italian island of Sardegna, the name ‘Cannonau’ is simply the local word for the grape type known in France as ‘Grenache’. Wine researchers now believe that this grape is native to Sardegna and was indeed not introduced to Sardegna by the Aragon’s of Spain (as was believed for so many years).

Being a late-ripening grape variety, it is well suited to the hot and dry summers found in Sardegna, which allow it to develop generous red and dark red fruit flavours and soft acidity.

We love to enjoy this wine with slow roasted meats such as kangaroo, lamb or beef brisket. Alternatively, roasted nuts or chestnuts make a delightful accompaniment to this drop.

Optimal Serving Temp: 18-20 Degrees Celsius

The Winery

The Viticoltori della Romangia is a collective wine making society that was founded in 1996, rising from the Cantina Sociale di Sorso Sennori, founded in 1955. Their focus is to produce wines that show the remarkable history and taste of the regions’ typical grapes such as Cannonau and Vermentino.

With their location of the vineyards being on the medium hillsides between Sorso and Sennori that overlook the coastal region of the Gulf of Asinara, this unique territory and microclimate has aided  this vineyard in producing highly awarded and regarded wines within Italy and internationally.

What does Cannonau di Sardegna ‘D.O.C.’ means?

This refers to the Italian acronym ‘Denominazione di Origine Controllata’ (or ‘Controlled designation of origin’). For Cannonau di Sardegna to carry the ‘D.O.C.’ on the label, it must be produced on the island of Sardegna, follow strict guidelines that control wine ageing requirements and have minimum alcohol levels (depending on its classification as a sweet, dry or fortified version of the wine).
