The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

Who said Chianti was a thing of the past? They’d be damn wrong. This Vegan and organically produced Chianti D.O.C.G ‘Tenuta di Campriano’ from Buccia Nera is deliciously smooth and with a medium body, embodies the easy drinking and pleasurable nature you’d look for in a quality Chianti.

If I wanted to keep to the traditional pairings of the Chianti wine region, I would recommend a pairing of simple pastas with tomato-based meat ragù, lasagne, Margarita pizza, fennel salami’s or Crostini (little toasted breads) topped with marinated mushrooms or chicken liver pâté.

Outside of a Tuscan dining context however, I’ve found Chianti D.O.C.G to work well with Beef burgers with all the trimmings, stuffed & roasted chicken, or a traditional German bratwurst panino with sauerkraut, cheese, mustards and tomato chutney.

There’s a reason that Chianti is known as dependable and ‘go-to’, the harmonious flavours and restrained intensity of this wine has made it renowned as a classic choice to enjoy with a meal.

The Winery

Buccia Nera winery is situated on the hills beyond the city of Arezzo, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. The winery counts about 60 hectares of vineyards and olive yards extended from 200mt to 500mt on the sea level.

The name of the Company “Buccia Nera” means “Black Grape Skin” and comes from the family’s historic nickname. Their grandfathers were called ‘Buccia Nera’ for the dark colour of their skin – they was so tanned from working in the vineyards under the sun every day. But Buccia Nera has a double meaning for this family, because it also acts as a connection with the black skin of Sangiovese grapes that help produce the amazing Buccia Nera wine.

The Buccia Nera philosophy is to achieve well-being, pleasure and serenity. This is their aim every day with customers and consumers, surrounding them with things of real, sincere, true quality.

Buccia Nera estate was purchased by the actual owner, the Mancini family, at the beginning of 20th century, and is still a family-managed company today. Their grandfather started by producing quality grapes for Chianti wine, and in the modern rebirth of Buccia Nera, the family produce owner-bottled Chianti wine.

In the vineyards the system of ‘Allevamenti’ is ‘Cordon’ (just for chardonnay they use the ‘Guyot’ method). The older vineyards are 30-34 years old, and there are 4000 plants for hectare. In the newer spaces, they range from 20 to 5 years old, and have 5500 /6000 plants for hectare. The medium production of grapes is 60ql/ha. The Mancini family produce especially Chianti DOCG, but have other typical wines in production, red and white alike.

The owners of today, three sisters, Anastasia, Alessia and Roberta manage Buccia Nera with great passion for nature and respect for the land. The Buccia Nera vineyards were certified organic from 2002.

From the year 2004, Buccia Nera Estate has started a process of renewal. An example of this is a new modern and technological wine cellar. The company’s concept is to use technology to increase the quality of production, but without giving up the ancient Tuscan traditions and ethos of wine making, which creates great wines that are appreciated world-wide.

Buccia Nera begun in 2005 to export wines internationally, and is growing in the world market steadily, thanks to the passion for their craft and the quality of their wines.
