The Finer Details
What does our Somm say?
Wow! What a powerful punch of a red wine, this delicious example of a Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G from Scacciadiavoli. Full bodied, intense flavours and bouquet. So complex, multi levelled and persistent.
This deep, ruby red wine holds garnet hues, and reveals the most enjoyable bouquet; immediately the drinker identifies notes of dark plum and red citrus, with secondary aroma of earthy spices, smoke and leather. Lastly, hints of vanilla and oak feature due to its aging in French oak barrels.
To drink this wine is to really enjoy a great glass of a central Italian red, long, decadent and persistent in the mouth and super enjoyable with the right food pairing.
A delicious pasta with a red sauce ragu, traditional lasagne or even an eggplant parmigiana would make a wonderful match to this wine. On the meat side, think strong flavours like roasted meat and game. To be more specific, roast quail, venison pie, lamb cutlets or even roast duck would be perfect. For something more casual, try aged cheeses, duck liver pate on freshly baked bread, roasted chestnuts or garlic bread.
No matter whether you enjoy this wine with a meal, or on its own – make sure you use a decanter 2 to 3 hours before enjoying. This will bring out the multiple layers of flavour and increase the enjoyment for the drinker.
Optimal Serving Temp: 18-19 Degrees Celsius
The Winery
Founded in 1884, the Scacciadiavoli (“He who casts the devil out”, from scacciare – to banish, and diavoli – devils) winery takes its name from an exorcist that lived in a town at the borders of the property who used the wine for his rituals.
It was founded by Roman Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi, an imposing oenological complex, highly advanced for the epoca. In 1954 Amilcare Pambuffetti, at 71, bought the Scacciadiavoli holding, where at the age of 14 he had worked as a farm hand. Upon his death in 1977 his sons continued the activities that had begun with their father. In the year 2000 the Pambuffetti brothers, the children of Settimio, in the name of an ancient tradition, decided to take the winery into their own hands – the oldest of its kind in the area.
The winery has never stopped its production since 1884. As it lies on a hill, with a vertical building on four levels of which one is below ground, all the production takes place by gravity-feed flow technology.
As it stands today, the dimensions of the property are of 130 Ha of which 40 Ha are dedicated to grapevines. Current annual production is of around 250,000 bottles. The vines, at an average altitude of 400m above sea level, are situated on sandy-clay soil of medium depth, highly suited for quality viticulture specialized in late vine varieties such as Sagrantino. The vines occupy various hillsides in the municipalities of Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo and Giano dell’Umbria. We range the Scacciadiavoli Umbria Rosso I.G.T, Montefalco Rosso D.O.C, Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G & Montefalco Grechetto D.O.C in our unique wine portfolio.

What is Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G?
Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G region of production is south of Perugia in central Umbria near the communes of Montefalco and Bevagna. To carry this D.O.C.G status, there are multiple guidelines that must be followed: a wine must be 100% Sagrantino, the “secco” wines (or dry Sagrantinos) must be aged for a minimum of 30 months, with 12 months in wood.
The appellation was awarded DOC status in 1980, then elevated to DOCG status in 1992. Sagrantino di Montefalco is considered one of the rising stars of the Italian wine world.
The grape Sagrantino is an ancient and somewhat mysterious variety. It is thought to have arrived in Umbria from Greece, and its name refers, probably, to the word “sagra,” or festival. Though Umbria is mostly known for its white wines, Sagrantino is a big, tannic wine that, traditionally, was specially made for community festivals.
