2015/16 Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G, Maremma Toscana Sangiovese “I Perazzi”

$45.00

The best-known and best-selling wine of the La Mozza winery.

Conceived and produced to highlight its uniqueness as compared to other Morellini.

A blend that includes Mediterranean and indigenous varieties, along with the minimum 85% of Sangiovese required by the appellation.  Highly expressive, it best shows the potential of Maremma’s terroir.

‘I Perazzi’ owes its name to the pear-shaped fruit that grows on the La Mozza estate, and that appears on the iconic label.

On the nose you’ll find delicious liquorice, forest floor, cloves and dark fruit. On the palate you can expect thick and ripe fruity flavours with warm spices and oak.

This medium bodied, dry red is perfect to match with red meats, poultry, antipasto with prosciutto and other cured meats, and generally dishes with hearty, bold flavours.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

There’s a reason why ‘I Perazzi’ is so highly regarded amongst the wine community. It’s an entirely pleasing, easy-to-drink wine, never boring and never taken for granted.

As I breathe in this red drop, I pick up a complex harmony of red berries, balsamic, with noticeable slightly spicy and tobacco leaf notes. On the palate, it still remains fresh, with lots of juicy red and dark fruit. Warm in the mouth, with great balance. A pleasurable drink.

Wines with such presence, such as this Morellino di Scansano D.O.C from La Mozza, can definitely be enjoyed outside of a formal meal setting, with rich cheeses, dried fruits, good quality pâté, or fennel salami.

However, every great Italian wine ‘sings’ when enjoyed with a meal, and for this wine, the flavours of red meats, marinated vegetables, cured salami and prosciutto and even poultry make a well matched occasion of this wine.

My personal favourite? Try this with a wild boar ragu through handmade potato gnocchi, or some well marinated veal, on a bed of Brussel sprouts and pancetta.

The Winery
La Mozza consists of 36 hectares (90 acres) and lies in the Southwest corner of Tuscany’s Maremma, a dozen kilometres from the sea and 45 minutes Southwest of Montalcino.

This area is much drier than the fog-draped hills of central Tuscany.

The lack of morning mist means the grapes start ripening at sunrise and are sun-drenched until sunset. Rain is scarce as the Island of Elba off the coast acts as a windbreak, shifting eastbound moisture to the north and south. In this area, hot-climate varieties like Syrah and Alicante thrive, and the acidic edge of Sangiovese has transformed into Morellino’s lush cherry fruit.

The uniqueness of this territory, its wines as well as the D.O.C.G. of Morellino di Scansano are your  guarantee of excellence constantly undertaken by the winery.
