Vespa Bianco I.G.T

$93.75

What a great wine this is, the Vespa Bianco I.G.T from Bastianich Estate.

The flagship of the Bastianich estate (translated to ‘The Wasp’) was born with the winery in 1998 as standard-bearer and clear oenological message: Friulian wine, in its greatest expression, rivals in both quality and longevity all other world-famous whites of the world.

It is through this longevity that Vespa Bianco has built its reputation and its fame. Thanks to the elegance conferred by the Chardonnay grape, the structure provided by ripe Sauvignon Blanc and the creaminess of Picolit, this wine represents the peak of Friulian “super-white” blends and is rightly considered among the best white wines in Italy.

In its youth, Vespa Bianco from Bastianich Estate exhibits nuances of both yellow and antique gold hues, with extraordinary brightness and clarity.

On the nose hints of beeswax, apricots, and honey give the wine an immediate, fresh, though structured impact. In the mouth you will find great structure and texture of the wine expanding across the palate with finesse, voluptuousness and balance.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

There’s a reason that this Vespa Bianco is considered the flagship wine of the Bastianich estate. This full bodied white provides wonderful freshness and a wonderful complexity of aromas and flavours between the nose and the palate; white flowers, honey, apples and apricots are delivered on balanced acidity and a slightly buttery finish.

This intricacy of flavour in turn makes this Vespa Bianco so versatile to food pairing. From Pasta and shellfish dishes, to matured cheeses, lean fish and even cured meats; the Vespa Bianco from Bastianich is a sommelier’s dream when it comes to varied choice of accompaniment.

On one occasion, I have enjoyed this drop with veal schnitzel and radicchio salad, and most recently found it to be a great match to a Seafood Spaghetti with white wine reduced sauce.

If you’re looking for a great Sunday Roast wine pairing, Vespa is also great with Chicken or Turkey, and even slow cooked pork dishes.

This is one of those rare white wines which will age well, so do keep a bottle in your cellar and enjoy again in 5 or so years’ time.

The Winery

Founded in 1997, the Bastianich winery, then formed solely of the Buttrio vineyards, marked the owner’s return to their origins, and a reappropriation of their territorial identity. An immigrant in the United States as a child, Lidia, and her son Joe, born in the U. S., lived their lives and realized their careers in the United States.

Despite the distance and the difficulties of the global markets, the company has forged ahead, making the very high quality of its wines and their image a valuable calling card and a consistent standard-bearer in the wine world. Many, in fact, are the awards by guides, magazines and sectoral tasters.

Mother and son, famous for their eclectic world-view, are not just restaurateurs, television personalities and authors, but also lovers of wine and good-living in general. Their foresight has also allowed them to continually enlarge the scope of their passions and skills. The results are obvious to anyone familiar with their endeavours.

The Bastianich winery brand is bound to the family name, which has become synonymous with the development and realization of various projects, all of which are renowned for their quality, and their respect for culture and tradition. These endeavours are not only successful in terms of business, but also for the support and growth of their immediate neighbourhoods, their employees, and the promotion of the culture of Italian wine and food.
