The Finer Details
What does our Somm say?
This wine is a go-to wine for big family festivities or when you’ve cooked something delicious at home.
The aromas are quite bold. With a lot of red and dark fruit on the nose, it surprises the drinker with incredibly balanced acidity and intensity in the mouth.
I find the history and stories behind this winery pretty captivating, and I’m super happy that once again we’ve found a winery that is trying to share a less known wine grape with the wider world. Viva the Aglianico grape!
This dry red pairs well with minestrone or bean soups, lasagne or tomato based pasta dishes. In terms of meat, any beef, lamb or roast chicken dishes would make a wonderful pairing.
As an aperitif, try this with soft cheeses and crunchy baked bread.
A solid, reliable and delicious southern Italian red.
Optimal Serving Temp: 16-18 Degrees Celsius
The Winery
The long reaching. noble history behind this Winery is nothing short of amazing. The noble Mustilli family, originally from Ravello in the Republic of Amalfi, established itself in the town of Sant’Agata dei Goti at the beginning of the 14th century. Their tall, medieval houses are positioned in the centre of Sant’Agata. Long tunnels and cavities run through the underside of Palazzo Mustilli and the wider town, excavated to a depth of 45 ft, housing centuries old barriques and cellars of wine.
Starting in the 1960s, Leonardo e Marili Mustilli changed direction for the family wine making operation from a private affair to a commercial enterprise and planted the hills of Sant’Agata again with vines of the indigenous varieties Falanghina, Greco, Aglianico and Piedirosso. Leonardo Mustilli was the first to make, bottle and commercialise pure Falanghina wine in the ‘70s.
Until 2001 wine was made in the historical tunnels under the family estates, however today the wine making has been moved to a state-of-the-art facility, at the edge of town.
The two Mustilli daughters, Paola and Anna Chiara, are now running the family business; Paola is in charge of all commercial aspects, including sales abroad and Anna Chiara overseas the vineyards, winemaking and quality control.
They are a strong, passionate and stylish team of sisters that have brought international interest and regard not only for their medieval town, but for the amazing wines from Mustilli winery.
Wine aficionados who visit the Mustilli winery and its cellars are welcome in the Palazzi of the family in the historical centre of town. Within the family residence – they have constructed a wine bar “Le Cantine di Mustilli” with live music.
