Aragone D.O.C. Maremma Toscana

$75.00

The name ‘Aragone’ refers to the Aragonese of Spain, who together with the noble ‘de Medici’ family of Florene dominated the Maremma region (where the La Mozza state is situated) in 1500. The six-pointed star depicted on the label represents the aerial view of the Forte Stella, located in Porto Ercole, little more south of Grossetto.

A blend that includes Mediterranean and indigenous varieties. This inky, dark red wine is highly expressive with a bouquet of spice, plum and tobacco.

Black fruits and liquorice burst in the mouth, and earthy undertones provide pleasurable depth.

Aged for 18 months, this medium to full bodied, dry red is perfect to match with red meats, poultry, antipasto with prosciutto and other cured meats, and generally dishes with hearty, bold flavours.

Description

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

Wines with such presence, such as this noble red from Tuscany; the Aragone D.O.C from La Mozza, can definitely be enjoyed outside of a formal meal setting, with rich cheeses, dried fruits, good quality pâté, or spice infused salamis.

However, every great Italian wine ‘sings’ when enjoyed with a meal, and for this wine, the flavours of red meats, marinated vegetables, cured salami and prosciutto and even poultry make a well matched occasion of this wine.

My personal favourite? Try this with a spit roast goat in garlic dressing, on a bed of roasted tomatoes, potato, and couscous.

Decanter this wine for a few house prior to serving, to really bring out the depth of flavour and enhance your drinking experience.

The Winery
La Mozza consists of 36 hectares (90 acres) and lies in the Southwest corner of Tuscany’s Maremma, a dozen kilometres from the sea and 45 minutes Southwest of Montalcino. This area is much drier than the fog-draped hills of central Tuscany.

The lack of morning mist means the grapes start ripening at sunrise and are sun-drenched until sunset. Rain is scarce as the Island of Elba off the coast acts as a windbreak, shifting eastbound moisture to the north and south. In this area, hot-climate varieties like Syrah and Alicante thrive, and the acidic edge of Sangiovese has transformed into Morellino’s lush cherry fruit.

The uniqueness of this territory, and dedication to the art of winemaking at ‘La Mozza’ are your guarantees of excellence constantly undertaken by the winery.

  • Sangiovese 40%
  • Syrah 25%
  • Alicante 25%
