2018 Ben Murray Grenache

$56.25

‘Marananga’

Ben Murray winemakers look to create quality wines with a distinctly Barossa identity from the varieties that thrive in their golden valley

Their Grenache is made from grapes that are sourced from 60-year-old bush vines in Marananga (Barossa Valley, South Australia), hand-picked and destemmed.

The wine is produced with wild yeast open-fermented, hand-plunged, extended skin contact, and is matured in French oak (30% new oak).

The Ben Murray Grenache is a bright, light crimson-purple colour. Super drinkable and a crowd pleaser.

To the taste, it’s a lively, juicy, fresh wine, with red berry fruits that have crisp acidity and no sign of confection.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

The 2018 Ben Murray Grenache is the product of a great growing and ripening season in what has now been seen as a wonderful year to produce high quality wines from the Barossa region.

Ben Murray has sourced the Grenache for many years from Marananga Vineyards that are up to and over 100 years old.

Grenache is renowned in the Barossa region as a variety suited very well to the conditions. The vines produced ripe fruit from mid-March, which is harvested at ripeness, which was then crushed and fermented in open fermenters, cap plunged twice daily, in small fermenters.

Following fermenting to dryness, the wine was left in contact with the must for an additional 10 days. Pressed and racked directly to a mix of new and old French and American oak barrels for maturation for 14 months. Racked from barrel and prepared for bottling the resulting wine is a great example of the popular style.

If I wanted to keep to the traditional pairings of a Grenache, I would recommend a pairing of red meats, game, mature cheeses, and French cuisine. To be specific, try slow cooked wild boar stew, roasted seafood with garlic and lemon, quail with roasted parsnips or some aged blue vein cheese.

However, this Barossa Valley Grenache from Ben Murray lends itself to so much more than that!

We’ve found this South Australian Grenache to work amazingly well with Asian flavours too; enjoy this drop with pork cutlets & Asian coleslaw, barbecued duck salad, sticky miso roast chicken, pork buns, chilli crab or even a yellow beef curry.

Optimal Serving Temp: 18 Degrees Celsius

The Winery

In truth, Ben Murray is not one person, but two very passionate wine lovers who dreamed of one day crafting premium small batch wines with elegance and texture.

Like all great partnerships, it started with a common interest.

For Dan Eggleton (middle name – Ben) and Craig Thompson (middle name – Murray), that interest happened to a good drop of wine. As both Dan and Craig are originally Barossa boys, they have tasted a great wine or two…. or three over the years!
