Calabrone I.G.T Venezia Giulia

$162.50

Calabrone is an estate reserve released only when an excellent vintage is followed by a dry and mild September and October, when a percentage of the Refosco and all of the Schioppettino grapes undergo appassimento (drying). The drying process not only intensifies the flavours of these distinctive grapes but softens some of their natural tannic bite.

This deep inky red wine, Calabrone I.G.T from Bastianich Estate wines, has a decadent nose; chocolate, coffee, spices and matured red fruit delight the senses.

Aged for 24 months in French barrique, the powerful flavours and grip initially mislead with a soft, sweet impact – but this gives way to dry and warm enveloping notes on the palate.

A balanced, elegant and impressive wine that can be enjoyed now by itself or with meals of robust flavour or cellared up to 5 years for alter enjoyment.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

Traditionally enjoyed in the fresher months due to its full body and jam packed flavour, this Calabrone from Bastianich is ideal with roasted red meats, game and barbequed meats.

In particular, roast duck with a reduced sauce of Calabrone wine, on a bed of vegetables cooked in duck fat would be superb. Alternatively, some spicy Chicken Teriyaki or even Chicken liver pâté  spread on some crunchy quality bread will make this wine all the more enjoyable.

Outside of a meal setting, we love to savour the taste of this wine with a board of seasoned cheeses; think Monte Veronese ‘Ubriaco’, Parmigiano Reggiano, Aged Gouda, Gorgonzola, Stilton, Roquefort or Danish Blue.

If you’re clever, you’ll grab a few bottles of this and make sure to put one away in your cellar collection. This wine is sure to age super well.

Whichever way you choose to enjoy this fantastic wine from Bastianich Estate, make sure you use a decanter and let the wine breathe for a few hours prior to serving. This will open up the aromas and flavours even more, and the layered, rich notes will be more pleasurable to the drinker.

The Winery

Founded in 1997, the Bastianich winery, then formed solely of the Buttrio vineyards, marked the owner’s return to their origins, and a reappropriation of their territorial identity. An immigrant in the United States as a child, Lidia, and her son Joe, born in the U. S., lived their lives and realized their careers in the United States.

Despite the distance and the difficulties of the global markets, the company has forged ahead, making the very high quality of its wines and their image a valuable calling card and a consistent standard-bearer in the wine world. Many, in fact, are the awards by guides, magazines and sectoral tasters.

Mother and son, famous for their eclectic world-view, are not just restaurateurs, television personalities and authors, but also lovers of wine and good-living in general. Their foresight has also allowed them to continually enlarge the scope of their passions and skills. The results are obvious to anyone familiar with their endeavours.

The Bastianich winery brand is bound to the family name, which has become synonymous with the development and realization of various projects, all of which are renowned for their quality, and their respect for culture and tradition. These endeavours are not only successful in terms of business, but also for the support and growth of their immediate neighbourhoods, their employees, and the promotion of the culture of Italian wine and food.
