The Finer Details
What does our Somm say?
Wow. This is some serious wine magic from Lake Garda, a divine lakeside setting for the Nunzio Ghiraldi wine estate.
The Bouquet is fruity and elegant, with notes of almond, thyme and sage. In the mouth, it gives sensations of a very well balanced acidity. This marries with the good savouriness which comes from the clayey land rich in mineral salts. Freshness is the final best characteristic.
The minerality and richness you find in this dry white lends itself to match with mature and hard cheese, lean fish dishes and shellfish.
In terms of a perfect wine to food combination? I would definitely go for a spaghetti ‘ai frutti di mare’ (clams, pippies, mussels, squid and shrimp) with a light dusting of chilli, or alternatively some crusted fish with a creamy lemon dressing.

The Winery
For Nunzio Ghiraldi the choice to be a winemaker was born from the desire to follow one’s natural inclination: to live the countryside and work one’s own land. It was his grandfather (also named Nunzio), an engineer from Cremona, who had the happy intuition of purchasing Podere Sant’Onorata (the wine estate) in the countryside of Lugana di Sirmione in the early 1950s.
The vines of this winery are set on 20 hectares of pure clay, and are planted with a 100 percent Turbiana grapes, hence the purity of the vine variety of their wines.
This holding, situated in the cru of Lugana di Sirmione, has a vine patrimony whose age fluctuates between 15 and more than 60 years.
The farmhouse, dating back to ‘700, is today a rare instance of architectural integrity in the land of Lugana. Always the residence of the Ghiraldi family, over the years it has been renovated and transformed aiming to the production of their Lugana wine.
The setting of Lugana is divine; the turquoise waters of the lake a few steps from the farm, the temperate breezes that blew from the nearby snow-capped mountains of the lake and then that clay … soft and muddy in winter, hard and inviolable in summer, but he felt that it was the right ground in which vines of Trebbiano di Lugana should be planted. And so, the seed was thrown by the Ghiraldi family.
Today just as yesteryears, it is this passion of one’s natural surroundings that inspires the new generation of the Nunzio Ghiraldi winery. The vineyard has become the centre of the Ghiraldi family, and they are incredibly proud to share their wines all around the world.
