2018 Refosco Dal Peduncolo Rosso D.O.C

$56.25

Friuli Colli Orientali

Rightly considered among the best and most typical of the indigenous red grape varieties of the region, Refosco yields a red wine that is wild, visceral, and sanguine. Already during fermentation its color seems to refer to the resilience of the Friulian people and their immediate, sometimes peppery, bluntness.

Deep ruby and dark and colour, the rustic nose is immediately apparent along with notes of slightly underripe ripe red fruits, blackberry, plum, and cut herbs.

Aged for 7 months in Oak, the full-bodied palate shows a touch of roughness, especially in its youth, with a sharp contrast between the acidity of the wine and its tannins. This power and contrast makes it a super versatile wine to pair with food, lending itself not only to saucy meat dishes, but hard raw-milk cheeses.

The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

Undoubtedly one of my more favourite wines to pronounce out loud, this Refosco Dal Peduncolo Rosso D.O.C (Listen to that music!) is a full bodied, dry and deliciously versatile wine for food pairing.

Slow cooked kangaroo stew, traditional goulash with mashed potatoes or veal scallopini would make great meal mates with this wine for dinner time decadence. For a lighter, Aperitivo style accompaniment, try some quality Roquefort, Raw milk cheddar or Parmigiano Reggiano and smoked vegetables under oil.

If you’re clever, you’ll grab a few bottles of this and make sure to put one away in your cellar collection. With some ageing, more layers of tobacco and spice will develop in this wine.

Whichever way you choose to enjoy this fantastic wine from Bastianich Estate, make sure you use a decanter and let the wine breathe for a few hours prior to serving. This will open up the aromas and flavours even more, and the layered, rich notes will be more pleasurable to the drinker.

Optimal Serving Temp: 18-20 Degrees Celsius

The Winery

Founded in 1997, the Bastianich winery, then formed solely of the Buttrio vineyards, marked the owner’s return to their origins, and a reappropriation of their territorial identity. An immigrant in the United States as a child, Lidia, and her son Joe, born in the U. S., lived their lives and realized their careers in the United States.

Despite the distance and the difficulties of the global markets, the company has forged ahead, making the very high quality of its wines and their image a valuable calling card and a consistent standard-bearer in the wine world. Many, in fact, are the awards by guides, magazines and sectoral tasters.

Mother and son, famous for their eclectic world-view, are not just restaurateurs, television personalities and authors, but also lovers of wine and good-living in general. Their foresight has also allowed them to continually enlarge the scope of their passions and skills. The results are obvious to anyone familiar with their endeavours.

The Bastianich winery brand is bound to the family name, which has become synonymous with the development and realization of various projects, all of which are renowned for their quality, and their respect for culture and tradition. These endeavours are not only successful in terms of business, but also for the support and growth of their immediate neighbourhoods, their employees, and the promotion of the culture of Italian wine and food.
