The Finer Details

What does our Somm say?

This Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C. from Castelli Martinozzi is particularly forward in both rich aroma and taste – making it a perfect accompaniment to the traditional meat, game and pasta dishes of the Siena area.

To be specific, I would enjoy this with a Rosemary basted leg of lamb, ‘Bistecca Fiorentina’, Tuscan sausages or a delicious plate of pappardelle pasta with slow cooked wild boar ragu. To recreate these tried and true food pairings together is to experience a taste of the rich medieval and renaissance nostalgia of where this amazing wine originates from.

If you’d like to appreciate this wine in a simpler setting, try it out with some Aged pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese on herbaceous crackers.

To get the best out of this wine, decant for a few hours prior to tasting.

The Winery

Castelli Martinozzi has produced wines since 1373, it’s origin of religious monastery and noble Italian family ownership is reflected in the medieval architecture and historical defensive walls of villa and farmlands. This family owned estate is situated 10 km far from Montalcino and towers over the valley of Orcia and the hills that indicate in the west the bound of the Maremma of Tuscany.

Its area is of 160 hectares of which 12 hectares of vineyard alternate with 16 hectares of olive grove, wood and the sown area that has the optimal altitude from 400 to 480 m above sea level. Different factors such as the correct location of the cultivated area, the absence of fog, the presence of good ventilation create a climatic microhabitat that guarantees high quality products even in lean years.

The most ancient prize for wine Castelli Martinozzi was received in Siena in a provincial viticulture-wine-making contest by Cesare Francalanci Martinozzi in 1892. In modern times, the winery has continued to receive international recognition for its superior expressions of typical Tuscan wines of the Montalcino area.
